Hello Everyone,

Here is the basic overview of everything that is covered in the 6th grade math curriculum.  I have broken it down by quarters so that you know the approximate times each topic will be taught.

Have a great day!

Embedded above is a sample of great student work.  What makes it impressive is formulas and steps are shown.  The check marks are also evidence that students were checking their answers in class.

Hope this helps,

MATH UPDATE....

Parents:
Wanted to share the following with you as there are some important dates to note.

-Students received their test back today that was taken yesterday.  It was on Integers and Exponents.  The retest date for that test will be Monday, Feb 21 and they either signed up today or need to sign up tomorrow so that I can print a copy for them if they want to retest.  The "RETEST" signup folder remains on the front board and they should be able to tell you where that is.  If they retest, an 80% will be the highest grade they can receive and I will note in SPAN the original grade for you as well as the retest grade.  These grades are now on SPAN.

-We have had MANY students absent over the past few weeks and so a lot of makeup work is taking place.  Please be patient with the posted grades on SPAN.  My goal is to get all makeup and retake grades posted on Monday.  Of course keep in mind, there were 8 more students out for yesterday's test and those makeups probably won't be posted by Monday.

-I will send an updated interim report home on Monday to be signed and returned for a homework grade.  Along with that, I will be sending home a sheet titled "HOW TO IMPROVE MY MATH GRADE".  Students received these earlier in the year but I want them to look at it again this time thinking about the student they have become.  Hopefully they will be able to check a few more things are now habit that used to be.....it also is a great guide for suggestions of new things to put in place.

-Good news......MY PRIZE BOX IS JUST ABOUT DEPLETED!!    Bad news.....MY PRIZE BOX IS JUST ABOUT DEPLETED!!  Each time a student makes a 100% on a test they put a mark (sticker) on their name on the back wall and also get to hit the prize box.  I am down to lollipops.  Things that have been a hit in the past:  cool pencil toppers, sudoku booklets, small puzzles, books, magnets, cool pens, matchbox cars, stickers, small toys, etc.  If you are out and see anything we might use, please send it in.  Also individually wrapped candy is a treat like the mini size candy bars.

-We have a test on Scientific Notation tomorrow.  Students reviewed the study guide in class today.  The retake test if needed for this one will be Wednesday, February 23.  I am really hoping that we nail this one the first time around and no one needs to sign up for retakes!!  The students had time in class today to continue preparing.  No new notes until Monday.

-NEXT UNIT:  Geometry  - we will cover perimeter, area (rectangles, circles, triangles, and parallelograms), circumference, classification of triangles by sides and angles, transformations,  and graphing in a coordinate plane.  I will post a testing schedule for this unit next Monday both in my room and send you a copy.

Solving Percents: The Triangle Method

Here's another tutorial designed to introduce students to the Triangle Method for solving Percents.  This is a procedure that a lot of Gnome students this year seem to enjoy.

Remember that you can watch the tutorial here on our Posterous site OR click on the link titled "Solving Percents: Triangle Method" to watch the tutorial on the Livescribe website.

Also know that for some reason, you won't hear Mrs. Beazlie's voice for about the first 10 seconds of the tutorial.  Not to worry, though:  The good math stuff doesn't start until then anyway!

Hope this helps, Mrs. Beazlie
